미국의 로버트 게이츠 국방장관은 18일 텔아비브에서 아미르 페레즈 이스라엘 국방장관과 회담을 갖고, 이란 등 현안문제에 관해 논의했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 이날 이스라엘에 도착한 직후 페레즈 장관과 회담을 가졌습니다.
이에 앞서 게이츠 장관은 카이로에서 호스니 무바라크 이집트 대통령과 회담을 가졌습니다. 게이츠 장관은 이 회담에서 이집트가 이라크의 안보를 지원하도록 촉구했다고 밝혔습니다.
게이츠 장관은 이번 중동 순방 중 요르단을 방문해 압둘라 국왕과 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 평화 과정과 이라크전쟁에 관해 회담을 가졌습니다.
압둘라 국왕은 회담을 마치고 발표한 성명에서 이라크에 보다 나은 미래를 보장할 수 있는 유일한 길은 모든 이라크인들을 정치과정에 참여시키는 것이라고 말했습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has met with his Israeli counterpart in Tel Aviv for talks on Iran and other issues.
Gates met with Amir Peretz shorly after his arrival in Israel today (Wednesday).
Earlier, Gates held talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo. Gates says he used the talks to urge Egypt to help secure Iraq.
Gates's Middle East trip also took him to Jordan for talks with King Abdullah on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and the war in Iraq.
In a statement, King Abdullah said the only way to guarantee a better future for Iraq is to include all Iraqis in the political process.
Gates also says the resignations of six Iraqi Cabinet ministers loyal to radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr could help the reconciliation process in Iraq.
