Russian lawmakers have accused the United States of interfering in their country's political process, ahead of upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections in Russia.
The lower house of parliament (the State Duma) accused U.S. officials of funding training courses, seminars and other events they said distort Russian developments that portray them in a tendentious (distorted) way. They specifically mentioned last week's U.S. State Department report critical of Russia's human rights and democracy record.
The upper house (Federation Council) adopted a similar measure calling the report interference in Russia's internal affairs.
Lawmakers acted on the eve of a planned Moscow rally by the "Other Russia" movement, a group of Kremlin critics who accuse President Vladimir Putin of efforts to suppress democracy.
"Other Russia" sought to rally in Pushkin Square, the traditional site of gatherings by democratic activists. But authorities said a pro-Kremlin group (Young Guard) already had reserved the site and directed them elsewhere.
