작년에 투자신탁의 가치는 120%가 올라 미국내에서 이런 신탁중에서 최고의 실적을 기록했습니다.
헤르츠펠드씨는 최근 라울 카스트로의 발언이 기업에 낙관적인 전망을 가져다 주었다고 말합니다.
헤르츠펠트씨는 작년 8월부터 쿠바의 실권을 장악한 라울 카스트로의 발언을 미루어 볼 때 그는 미국에 대해 훨씬 유화적인 태도를 보이고 있다고 말했습니다. 그러면서 앞으로 그가 자유 선거를 비롯해 정치범 석방, 몰수 재산에 대한 보상, 자본주의로 복귀를 향해 어느 정도로 또, 얼마나 빨리 나갈지가 쿠바와 미국간 교역재개에 관건이라고 말했습니다.
헤르츠펠트씨는 쿠바에서는 현재 기간시설들이 노후화되고 있다며 앞으로 쿠바가 약 4만채의 신규 주택이 필요하다고 말했습니다.
카리비안 베이슨 펀드사는 미국의 건설, 철도, 상수도, 통신과 관광회사들을 망라하고 있습니다.
럼주와 사탕, 광산,어업과 같은 쿠바의 전통적인 산업들도 외국인 투자자들에게 좋은 기회를 가져다 주고 있습니다.
‘쿠바계 미국인 국민재단’의 카밀라 갈라루도 씨의 말입니다.
카밀라 갈라루도씨는 현재 쿠바는 투자와 재건에 많은 지원을 필요로 하고 있다며 카스트로 사후에 쿠바에서 새로운 사업을 모색하는 기업들에게 쿠바에 대한 투자를 권장하고 있다고 말했습니다.
그러나 마이애미의 일부 쿠바계 미국인들은 미국 기업들이 쿠바에서 사업을 잘 할 수 있으리라는 전망에 회의를 표시하고 있습니다.
알바로 페르난데스씨도 이런 사람들 가운데 한 사람입니다. 페르난데스 씨는 쿠바에 대한 미국의 금수조치에 반대하고 있지만, 일단 쿠바와 교역이 재개되면 미국의 산업들이 불리해질 것으로 생각하고 있습니다.
페르난데스씨는 쿠바에 대한 금수조치 해제는 하나의 기회가 되겠지만, 미국은 후발 주자가 될 수밖에 없을 것이라고 내다봤습니다. 쿠바에서 벌어지고 있는 일을 추적하고 있는 사람들이라면 누구나 쿠바가 나머지 세계 즉 중국이나 유럽, 이탈리아, 스페인, 멕시코와 같은 나라들과 거래를 시작하려고 한다는 것을 알게 될 것이며, 현재 쿠바는 움직이고 있다고 페르난데스씨는 말했습니다.
그러나 토마스 헤르츠펠트씨 같은 다른 사람들은 별로 걱정하지 않습니다. 헤르츠펠트 씨는 현재 쿠바에서 활동하고 있는 비미국계 기업들은 앞으로 카스트로 정부와 거래를 피하게 될 것으로 생각하고 있습니다.

With President Fidel Castro in declining health, a growing number of companies in the United States are making plans to do business in Cuba.
They are doing so based on reports that acting President Raul Castro is more pragmatic than his ailing older brother and could move Cuba towards the Chinese economic model. His seemingly conciliatory tone toward the United States recently also has led some firms to start considering future ventures on the island.
Shares in corporations set to do well if the U.S. embargo against Cuba is lifted have rallied over recent months.
Steve Mort visited a Miami investment adviser who is banking on change in the communist country.

In Miami, business leaders and investors are closely watching developments in Cuba. Many view potential political change there as an opportunity.
Investment adviser Thomas Herzfeld has established a portfolio of American companies set to benefit if the U.S. embargo against Cuba is lifted.

"From early on we decided that once the trade was resumed with Cuba - Cuba being the most important of he island countries in size and population - there would be a boom in that country - one that we believe would proliferate throughout the region, and we always focused on Cuba. But of course being a U.S. investor and a U.S. citizen we can't invest directly in that country so we have invested in companies that we believe will do well even if trade is not resumed with Cuba, but also in companies that would benefit once trade is resumed".

Herzfeld's Caribbean Basin Fund is a small one. Its assets are 14 million dollars and trades on the Nasdaq with the ticker symbol CUBA.
It is a closed-end fund so, unlike a mutual-fund, its share price is determined by the demand on market rather than the value of the fund's assets.
The value of the fund's stock has risen 120 percent in the past year, making it the top
performing fund of its kind in America.
Herzfeld says Raul Castro's recent comments give business cause for optimism.

"For those of us who've been listening to Raul since he took over power last August, he's taken a much more conciliatory posture towards the U.S. Now how far will he go owards free elections, releasing the political prisoners, compensation for confiscated property, return to capitalism, how far will he go and how soon will he do it? That would be the key, in my view, towards to the U.S. resuming trade with Cuba and we'll
just have to see".

In Cuba, infrastructure is crumbling and, Herzfeld says the country needs 40-thousand new homes. The Caribbean Basin Fund includes U.S. construction, railroad, water, telecommunications and tourism companies.
Traditional Cuban industries such as rum, sugar, tobacco, mining and fisheries also present foreign investment opportunities.

"They're going to need a lot of investment into the country and a lot of help in reconstruction and certainly we encourage companies that are looking and dealing in a post-Castro Cuba to do just that, I mean as they would anywhere else. And certainly that would be of great assistance to helping create jobs and industry in Cuba that don't exist today".

But in Miami, some Cuban-Americans doubt that American business can flourish on the island.
Alvaro Fernandez is among them. He campaigns against the U.S. embargo, but he believes that American industry will be at a disadvantage once trade is resumed.

"There is an opportunity and the United States of America will come in late. Anybody who follows what is going on in Cuba will realize that they are starting to do business with the rest of the world - China, Europe,Italy, Spain, Mexico, you name it, they've got something going with them".

But others, like Thomas Herzfeld, are less concerned.
He thinks non-U.S. companies already in Cuba will be shunned in the future for doing business with the Castro government. He also denies his efforts are helping to erode the U.S. embargo. Herzfeld is now meeting with hundreds of businesses on joint ventures, and plans to invest directly in Cuba once the U.S. embargo is lifted.
