미국의 부시 대통령 행정부는 에티오피아가 유엔의 대북 제재결의를 위반하고 북한으로부터 비밀리에 무기를 구입하도록 허용했다고 미국 신문이 보도했습니다.
뉴욕 타임즈 신문은 8일자에서 지난 1월 북한에서 에티오피아로 무기가 수송되는 것을 미국이 묵인했다고 보도했습니다.
이 신문은 지난해 7월 북한이 핵 실험을 실시하자 유엔 안전보장이사회가 대북 제재결의안을 통과시킨 뒤 석 달 만에 이같은 일이 벌어졌다고 보도했습니다.
뉴욕 타임즈 신문은 이름을 밝히지않은 몇몇 미국정부 고위 관리들의 말을 인용해 지난해 10월 유엔의 대북 제재 결의안이 통과된 후 에티오피아가 북한으로부터 무기를 인도받을 계획을 갖고 있음을 미국 관리들이 알게 됐다고 말했습니다.
미국정부 관리들은 이를 막지 않기로 결정했으나 에티오피아 정부에 대해 북한으로부터 더 이상 무기를 구입하지 말도록 압력을 가했습니다.
미 국무부 대변인은 이와 관련해 논평을 거부했으나 미국은 유엔 안보리의 대북 결의안을 계속 지지하고 이를 이행할 의지로 있다고 말했다고 뉴욕 타임즈 신문은 전했습니다.

A U.S. newspaper says the Bush administration allowed Ethiopia to secretly buy weapons from North Korea in an apparent violation of U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang.
The New York Times newspaper reported in today's (Sunday's) edition that U.S. officials allowed Ethiopia to complete the purchase in January. The paper said the deal occurred three months after the U.N. Security Council voted to impose sanctions on North Korea as punishment for its atomic test.
The newspaper cited several unnamed senior U.S. officials. It reported that the officials first learned Ethiopia was planning to receive arms after the resolution was passed in October. The paper said U.S. officials decided not to block the deal, but to press Ethiopia not to make further purchases.
The paper said a State Department spokesman declined to comment on the shipment. But he said the United States is committed to upholding and enforcing U.N. security council resolutions.
