우든 회장은 이번 조사 결과 응답자의 84%는 세계 문제와 관련한 미국의 대처방식에 우려하고 있고, 82%는 세계가 미국에 점점 더 위험해지고 있다고, 또 73%는 미국은 세계를 좀더 평화롭고 번영되게 만드는 데 있어 지도국의 역할을 제대로 수행하지 못하고 있다고 답했다고 지적했습니다.
이밖에 응답자의 68%는 전세계가 미국을 부정적으로 보고 있다고 생각하는 것으로 나타났다고 우든 회장은 밝혔습니다. 구체적으로는 34%가 미국을 매우 부정적으로, 67%는 미국과 나머지 나라들 간의 관계가 잘못돼 있다고 답했습니다.
우든 회장은 이같은 상황을 이른바 `우려 지수'로 산정하면, 최고치를 2백으로 할 때 1백37에 해당된다고 설명했습니다.
우든 회장은 특히 이번 여론조사 결과는 미국인들이 전세계에서 군사력을 사용하는 것에 강력히 반대하고 있음을 보여주고 있다고 말했습니다.
한 예로, 이란에 대한 군사행동을 지지한 응답자는 8%에 불과했고, 70%는 앞으로 12개월 안에 미군이 이라크에서 철수해야 한다는 입장을 밝혔습니다.
한편 이번 조사에서는 응답자의 4분의 3이 핵 확산에 대해 갈수록 우려하고 있다고 말했습니다.
우든 회장은 응답자들은 무엇이 미국 외교정책에서 우선과제가 되어야 할것인지를 꼽으라는 질문에, 핵무기 확산 방지를 최우선으로 지적했다고 말했습니다.
`포린 어페어즈' 잡지의 편집책임자인 기드온 로즈 씨는 이같은 조사결과는 미국 외교정책의 미래와 관련해 `놀라운' 일이라고 말했습니다.
로즈 씨는 조사결과는 미국인들이 행정부에 대한 신뢰감을 상실했음을 보여주는 것이라면서, 이런 상황이 부시 행정부 뿐아니라 앞으로 들어설 새 행정부에도 일정 기간 제약을 가하게 될 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.

A new poll shows that declining American public support for the war in Iraq is leading to an increasingly negative public opinion of resorting to military force to settle global conflicts. The findings come in the fourth survey conducted jointly by the non-profit organization Public Agenda and Foreign Affairs, one of America's most influential publications on foreign policy. VOA's Stephanie Ho reports from Washington.
Public Agenda's president, Ruth Wooden, said the latest survey results show what she described as a public "crisis of confidence" in the current direction of U.S. foreign policy. She said the main finding was the so-called anxiety indicator, which is a composite of answers to five different questions.
/// WOODEN /// "For example, 84-percent are worried about the way things are going for the United States in world affairs. Eighty-two-percent say the world is becoming more dangerous for the United States, 73-percent say the United States is not doing a good job as a leader in creating a more peaceful, prosperous world, and 68-percent believe the rest of the world sees the United States negatively. Actually, one third, 34-percent, say very negatively. And 67-percent, two out of three, say that U.S. relations with the rest of world are on the wrong track."
She called the current anxiety indicator "very high" at 137 points, out of a total possible 200 points.
An overwhelming number of the people polled linked the U.S. image around the world to global security. They urged the United States to improve its reputation by taking a more positive leadership role in issues like reducing global warming and controlling diseases.
Wooden says the survey specifically shows that Americans are strongly opposed to using military force around the world. As an example of this, she said only eight-percent of the respondents supported possible military action against Iran. At the same time, 70-percent of the respondents favor a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq within 12 months. Meanwhile, the survey finds that three out of four Americans are increasingly concerned about nuclear proliferation.

The managing editor of Foreign Affairs, Gideon Rose, called the results "striking" for the future of U.S. foreign policy.

The Public Agenda - Foreign Affairs poll was based on interviews conducted about one month ago with more than one-thousand adults around the country. The margin of error is plus or minus three-percentage points.
