A powerful earthquake has struck northeast Afghanistan, sending tremors across Pakistan and India.
The United States Geological Survey said today's (Tuesday's) quake measured at a magnitude of 6.2 and hit near the town of Faizabad not far from the Hindu Kush mountain range. No deaths or damage have been reported so far.
Officials from Faizabad say they are waiting for reports of casualties and damage from outlying areas.
The earthquake was felt as far away as New Delhi, India, northern Pakistan, Kashmir and the Afghan capital, Kabul.
Seismic activity is relatively high in the region around Afghanistan's Hindu Kush mountain range. In 2002, a 7.6 earthquake destroyed several villages in the area and killed more than 1,000 people.
In recent weeks, northeastern Afghanistan has suffered from severe flooding following heavy rains and melting snows.
