World oil prices hit another new high for the year Monday as traders watched growing tension among major oil producer Iran, the United Nations Security Council, and Britain.
The price of oil for future delivery went as high as 63 dollars and 30 cents a barrel in New York. Prices eased to just below 63 dollars by the close of trading in New York.
The United Nations Security Council recently voted to freeze some Iranian assets in the hope of persuading Tehran to stop enriching uranium. Some western nations say Iran is working on a bomb, while Tehran says it wants only to make electricity.
Tension was also raised by Iran continuing to detain 15 British sailors and marines it accuses of illegally entering Iranian waters.
Iran borders a key waterway (the Strait of Hormuz) through which much of the world's oil must pass on its way to market.
