Israel's prime minister says his country is willing to make "painful" concessions to advance the long-stalemated peace process.
Speaking at a communal farm (kibbutz), Prime Minister Ehud Olmert also said a Saudi initiative for Middle East peace could form what he called a "convenient basis" for future talks between Israel and moderate Arabs.
He did not specify concessions Israel is willing to make.
Mr. Olmert's statements come days ahead of an Arab summit conference and a visit to the region by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
The Arab summit is expected to relaunch the Saudi initiative, which calls for Israel to return all territory occupied in 1967 in exchange for normal relations with Arab countries. Israel says it is taking the offer seriously but that elements of the plan are unacceptable.
