영국정부는 20일 각학교에 얼굴 전면을 가리는 회교도 여학생들의 베일 착용을 금지하는 권한을 부여했습니다.
오늘 발표된 지침안에 따르면 베일 착용 금지는 각 학교의 결정에 맡겨질 것이며, 전국적인 정책으로 결정되지 않을 예정입니다.
영국 교육기술부는 성명을 발표하고 학교장들이 학생들의 의복 규정에 관한 결정을 내리기 전에 지역사회와 학부모들과 상의하고, 각 학교가 학생들의 사회적, 종교적 , 의료적 요구를 가능한한 최대로 수용할 것을 권고하고 있습니다.
이번 지침은 베일을 착용한 학생들의 하는 말을 이해하고 그들의 얼굴 표정을 읽기 어렵다는 학교 교사들의 항의가 증가하자 성안된 것입니다.
영국 대법원은 지난해 얼굴 전면 가리개 착용을 요구하는 12살난 한 회교도 여학생의 항소를 기각했습니다.

Britain's government has given local school administrators the authority to ban students from wearing full-face Muslim veils.
Under new guidelines issued today (Tuesday), a decision on banning the veil (the niqab) will be up to individual schools and will not be part of a nationwide policy.
A statement from the Department for Education and Skills urges school administrators to consult with local communities and parents before determining dress codes. It also encourages schools to accommodate the social, religious and medical requirements of students, whenever possible.
The new guidelines grew out of teacher complaints that the veils make it difficult to read facial expressions and to understand what students are saying.
London's High Court last year rejected an appeal from a Muslim schoolgirl who sought to wear a full-face veil.
