노동당 소속인 나이젤 그리피스 의원은 하원 부의장 직에서 사임했습니다. 그리피스 의원은 이를 통해 블레어 총리의 계획에 반대표를 던질 수 있게 됐습니다. 그리피스 의원은 ‘무거운 마음과 깨끗한 양심’으로 사임을 결정했다고 말했습니다.
그리피스 의원은 노동당 내에서도 핵 무기 개발에 반대하고, 1980년대의 독자적 핵 해체 노력을 지지하는 쪽입니다.
14일 투표 결과 노동당에서 충분한 반대표가 나오면, 블레어 총리는 야당에 기대서 핵 무기 개발 계획을 추진해야 합니다.

A top member of the British cabinet has resigned in protest of Prime Minister Tony Blair's plans for the country's nuclear missile program.
Nigel Griffiths stepped down as deputy leader of the House of Commons to be able to vote against the government on the issue.
Griffiths said he is leaving "with a heavy heart but a clear conscience." Griffiths is among a group of members of the ruling Labor Party who oppose nuclear arms and had supported unilateral disarmament in the 1980's.
If enough party members oppose the plan in the vote expected Wednesday Mr. Blair will have to rely on support from opposition Conservatives for passage of the bill.
