베트남 공산정부는 1975년 베트남 전쟁 종전 이후 통일된 베트남에서 권력을 장악한 이후 교황청과의 관계를 단절했고, 그 이후 종교단체들에 대한 강력한 통제를 유지하고 있습니다.
그동안 교황청과 베트남의 관계는 개선됐고, 이번 회담은 지난 1월 베트남 응웬 탄 둥 총리와 베네딕토 교황 간의 만남에 뒤이은 것입니다.
교황청 대표단은 베트남 정부 당국자들 이외에도 베트남 카톨릭 교회 지도자들도 만날 예정입니다.
8천5백만 명의 베트남 인구 가운데 약 7%가 카톨릭 신자입니다.

A Vatican delegation is in Hanoi today (Monday) to discuss re-establishing diplomatic ties with Vietnam.
The country's communist government cut ties with the Vatican after taking power in a unified Vietnam at the end of the war in 1975, and has kept tight control on religious organizations ever since.
Relations between the two have been improving and the current talks follow a January meeting between Vietnamese Premier Nguyen Tan Dung and Pope Benedict.
In addition to government officials, the Vatican group will also meet with leaders of Vietnam's Catholic Church.
Nearly seven percent of Vietnam's 85 million people are Catholics.
