(Eng)

The United Nations says it is resuming its efforts to repatriate Afghans who have been living in Pakistan, but want to return to their homeland.

The U.N. refugee agency today (Friday) said 25 Afghans voluntarily returned home this week, marking the start of this year's repatriation efforts.

A recent Pakistani government registration drive found that more than two million Afghan citizens remain in Pakistan.

A refugee agency spokesman (Ron Redmond) said every Afghan who applies for repatriation must pass a verification test that involves eye scans. This is to ensure that individuals are not applying multiple times to claim greater financial assistance packages.

Agency officials say the Pakistani government is giving unregistered Afghan citizens until mid-April to repatriate.

The U.N. says it has helped almost three million Afghans return home from Pakistan since 2002.
