A top U.S. official says lifting sanctions on North Korea will take time and depend on its compliance with a deal last month on its nuclear disarmament.
Speaking in Tokyo today (Friday), U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte said North Korea would have to meet many aspects of compliance with the agreement before sanctions could begin to be removed.
The agreement reached (during six-nation nuclear talks) in Beijing last month calls on North Korea to dismantle its nuclear facilities in exchange for fuel aid and steps to normalize relations.
Meanwhile, U.S. intelligence officials say they stand by their assessment that North Korea was pursuing uranium enrichment in 2002.
Recent news reports had suggested that the intelligence community might have overstated the extent of North Korea's actual nuclear capabilities.
