The United States and North Korea are to hold landmark talks next week to discuss normalizing relations.
A U.S. State Department spokesman (Sean McCormack) is playing down any expectation of a breakthrough, saying the meeting in New York is just a first step. He said (Wednesday) it is unlikely the talks will produce immediate results.
The United States has never had formal relations with North Korea.
The talks are scheduled to begin Monday and are the latest step in realizing an agreement reached last month over North Korea's nuclear weapons.
