미국의 션 매코맥 국무부 대변인은 28일 기자들에게 실무 차원의 이번 회담은 두 나라의 관계 정상화를 향한 첫걸음이라고 밝히고, 그러나 이번 회담에서 당장 어떤 구체적인 성과가 나오기는 어려울 것이라고 말했습니다.
미국은 북한과 공식적인 외교관계를 갖고 있지 않습니다.
매코맥 대변인은 힐 차관보와 김계관 부상이 오는 3월 5일과 6일 양일간 뉴욕에서 회담을 가질 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
매코맥 대변인은 김계관 부상이 뉴욕에 오기 전에 샌프란시스코를 방문할 것이라고 말했습니다. 통상적으로 북한의 외교관들은 뉴욕 인근지역까지로 활동영역이 제한돼 있습니다.
김 외상은 샌프란시스코 방문 때 스탠포드 대학교에서 강연하고, 비정부기구 관계자들과 만날 것으로 보입니다.

Senior U.S. and North Korean officials will hold talks on the normalization of relations next week in New York, the latest step in realizing an agreement reached this past month over North Korea's nuclear weapons.
U.S. State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters today (Wednesday) that the working group talks are just the first step toward normalization. He added that it is unlikely that the meeting will produce any immediate results.
The United States has never had formal relations with North Korea.
McCormack said (U.S. Assistant Secretary of State) Christopher Hill and (North Korean Vice Minister) Kim Kye Kwan will meet in New York on March 5th and 6th. It will be their first meeting since the agreement was reached on February 13th at the six-party talks.
McCormack said Kim will visit San Francisco before arriving in New York in a rare stopover. North Korean diplomats are usually restricted to travel near New York.
