Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has dismissed the upcoming Latin American tour of his U.S. counterpart, George Bush, as a diplomatic offensive that is destined to fail.
Mr. Chavez told a news conference in Caracas Saturday it is too late for what he called the U.S. "offensive" to counter Venezuela's influence in the region.
He said he respects the right of other Latin American leaders to meet with President Bush, but he vowed Venezuela will never receive Mr. Bush. President Bush is scheduled to travel to Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico from March eighth through the fourteenth.
The White House says the trip is aimed at underscoring the U.S. commitment to the Western Hemisphere.
