이라크 주둔 미군당국은 연합군과 무장세력사이의 교전 중 민간인이 사망한 사건에 대해 조사 중입니다. 미군당국은 반군 거점인 바그다드 서부 라마디에서 22일 벌어진 치열한 교전 중에 민간인이 사망했다는 주장에 대해 조사를 벌이고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
이라크 미군 대변인은 23일 미 해군은 민간인 사상자가 없다고 보고 있으나, 민간인이 희생됐다는 주장이 제기돼서 조사 중이라고 말했습니다.
이 대변인은 당시 무장세력이 여러 채의 건물 안에 숨어서 저항했으며, 이 건물을 파괴하기 위해 공습을 요청했다고 말했습니다.
앞서 미군 당국은 6시간의 교전 끝에 최소한 무장세력 12명을 사살했다고 발표했습니다. 이라크 관리는 여성과 어린이를 포함해서 최소한 26명이 숨졌다고 말했습니다.
한편 이와 별도로 이라크 미군 지휘관은 무장세력이 폭발물과 유독 가스를 함께 사용하는 새로운 전술을 구사하는 것으로 보인다고 말했습니다.

The U.S. military in Iraq says it is investigating claims of civilian deaths during Thursday's fierce gunbattle between coalition forces and insurgents in the city of Ramadi -- an insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad.
A military spokesman (Lt. Col. Christopher Garver) told reporters in Baghdad today (Friday) U.S. Marines did not think there were civilian casualties, but there was a claim and the military is looking into it.
He said insurgents were "firmly entrenched" in several buildings and U.S. forces called in air strikes to destroy the buildings.
Earlier, the U.S. military said at least 12 insurgents were killed during the six-hour battle. But Iraqi officials say at least 26 people, including women and children, were killed.
Meanwhile, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Lieutenant General Ray Odierno, said insurgents appear to be changing tactics in their terror campaign by using toxic gas with explosives.
