"The New York Times" says the U.S. military has waged a campaign to capture or kill suspected terrorists in the Horn of Africa, using Ethiopia as a staging point.
The report in today's (Friday's) edition of the "Times" says the U.S. sent two Air Force gunships to Ethiopia in January, shortly after Ethiopian forces helped Somalia's weak interim government drive Islamist militants out of the lawless eastern African nation. The gunships eventually carried out two separate airstrikes in Somalia targeting leaders of Somalia's Islamist movement.
The newspaper says the campaign is the result of an evolving relationship between the U.S. and Ethiopia. The paper says the U.S. military has been training Ethiopian forces for several years, and has shared information with the Ethiopian military on the militants' whereabouts gathered by American spy satellites.
But a special advisor to Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi says the "Times" story is "a total fabrication."
