한국과 미국 국방장관 회담이 이번 주말에 워싱턴에서 열려 북한의 핵개발 계획 종식과 여러 안보 문제들이 논의됩니다.
한국 국방부 관계관들은 김장수 국방부 장관이 22일,워싱턴 방문길에 오른 가운데 김 장관이 24일까지 워싱턴에 머물면서 로버트 게이츠 미 국방장관과 회담을 갖고 북핵문제 이외에 한국의 전시 한국군 작전통제권 환수계획 등에 관해 논의할 예정이라고 말했습니다.
한국은 미국은 지난 해 10월 양국 국방관계관 회담에서 한국이 2009년 10월 15일에서 2012년 3월 15일 사이에 한국군 전시 작전통제권 환수하기로 합의했습니다. 미국측은 한국군의 전시 작전통제권을 2009년까지 이양할 것을 제의한 반면 한국은 작전통제권 환수 완료시기를 2012년까지 연정하는 방안을 원하고 있습니다.

South Korea's defense minister departed for Washington today (Thursday) where he will hold talks with his U.S. counterpart about North Korea's nuclear program and other security issues.
Seoul defense officials say Kim Jang-Soo will meet with Defense Secretary Robert Gates during his visit through Saturday. In addition to North Korea, the two defense chiefs are expected to agree on a timetable for South Korea to regain wartime operational control of its troops.
Last October, the U.S. and South Korea agreed that the takeover would take place sometime between (October 15,) 2009 and (March 15,) 2012. Washington has proposed that Seoul regain control by 2009, but Seoul prefers pushing the date back to 2012.
Kim will also stop in Tokyo to meet his Japanese counterpart before returning to South Korea.
