(Eng)

Japanese health officials say preliminary data show a rise in the country's birthrate for 2006 - the first increase in six years.

Japan's fertility rate (, or the average number of children a woman gives birth to,) has apparently risen slightly from an all-time low in 2005 (of one-point-two-six) to one-point-three last year. Final figures will come out in June.

Demographers say a country must maintain a birthrate of about two-point-one to keep the population from falling.

The Japanese government has been trying to encourage couples to have more children, and the country's health minister caused an uproar recently by calling women "birth-giving machines".

Japan's low birthrate could spell trouble for the future as ever fewer, young workers must support ever more retirees.

Officials attribute the rise in fertility to Japan's improved economy, which has encouraged couples to marry and have children.
