(Eng)

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says Russia's threat to withdraw from a missile treaty would pose problems for the United States and Europe.

On Thursday, Gates responded to a warning from Russia's military chief (General Yury Baluyevsky, chief of the Russian military's general staff,) that Moscow might abandon a 1987 treaty on intermediate-range nuclear missiles if the U.S. deploys missile defense systems in Poland and the Czech Republic.

The Russian military official's remarks come days after Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a speech in Munich that criticized U.S. global leadership and NATO's eastward expansion. President Putin said the NATO alliance is placing military forces on Russia's doorstep, which reduces the level of mutual trust.

Gates said Russia is more concerned about the developing threat of ballistic missiles shot from Russia's south or east.

On Thursday, a U.S. State Department spokesman (Sean McCormack) reiterated that defense missiles in Europe would not be aimed at Russia, but would protect Europe from possible attacks by Iran.
