(Eng)

INTRODUCTION:
Iran has rejected U.S. accusations that the Iranian leadership is involved in supplying Shiite militants in Iraq with sophisticated roadside bombs. This, after U.S. military officials in Baghdad presented for the first time what they called evidence of Iranian-made weapons that have killed American forces in Iraq. Leta Hong Fincher has more.

TEXT:

NARRATOR
Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, says "there should be a court to prove the case" against Iranian involvement in attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq. In an interview with the American television network ABC [Monday], Mr. Ahmadinejad says his country opposes conflict and bloodshed in Iraq and that problems in Iraq should be solved with dialogue, not by force.

MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD [Farsi with English voiceover]
"We are opposed to any kind of conflict in Iraq."

NARRATOR
An Iranian foreign ministry spokesman [Mohammad Ali Hosseini on Monday] specifically rejected U.S. accusations that Iran's top leaders are interfering in Iraq.

MOHAMMAD ALI HOSSEINI
"Such accusations cannot be relied upon or be presented as evidence. The United States has a long history of fabricating evidence."

NARRATOR
On Sunday, U.S. military officials in Baghdad showed journalists what they said was evidence of Iranian-made weapons that have killed at least 170 coalition troops in Iraq in the last three years.

Those weapons include armor-piercing roadside bombs known as "explosively formed penetrators" with serial numbers that U.S. officials say have been traced to Iranian arms factories.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack [on Monday] insists that the evidence against Iran is solid.

SEAN MCCORMACK
"Everybody agrees that there's a threat to our troops from these devices and from the networks that supply them. I don't think you're hearing much skepticism at all from any quarter, except for maybe President Ahmadinejad, that the Iranians are involved in these networks."

NARRATOR
McCormack says the Bush administration will do everything within its power to protect U.S. troops in Iraq from attacks. But he says the United States has no plans to invade Iran.

Several U.S. Democratic party Senators have voiced skepticism about the Bush administration's charges against Iran. Senator Chris Dodd says [on Sunday] he is concerned that the White House is trying to build a case for military confrontation with Iran.

CHRIS DODD
"I don't doubt that Iran has been involved to some degree, and clearly that's a problem that needs to be addressed. But I'm getting uneasy that they're [the Bush administration is] trying to create a premise, set a premise for some future broader military action in Iran. I think that would be a huge mistake at this point."

NARRATOR
He and other Democratic party Senators are urging the Bush administration to resolve its disputes with Iran through diplomacy rather than military force.
