신임 이라크 주둔 미군사령관인 데이빗 페트라우스 장군은 10일 이라크 문제는 심각하지만, 상황이 전혀 희망이 없는 것은 아니라고 말했습니다.
페트라우스 사령관은 이날 바그다드 인근의 미군기지 ‘캠프 빅토리’에서 거행된 취임식에서 이같이 말했습니다. 페트라우스 대장은 조지 케이시 대장의 후임으로 이라크 주둔 미군사령관에 취임했습니다.
페트라우스 사령관은 성공에 대한 희망적인 전망은 좋은 일로 생각한다고 밝히고, 비관적인 전망은 이라크에 계속적인 폭력과 내전을 가져올 수밖에 없을 것이라고 경고했습니다.
페트라우스 사령관은 이날 미군 장병에게 보낸 지휘서신에서 이라크 군과 어깨를 나란히 해 이라크의 안보를 강화하는 과업의 중대성을 강조했습니다.
한편 이날 바그다드의 시아파 거주지역에서 수니파 저항세력들에 의한 2건의 공격으로 적어도 8명의 민간인들이 숨졌습니다.

The new U.S. military commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, says the stakes in Iraq are high, but the situation is not hopeless.
General Petraeus officially took command of his new post in a ceremony today (Saturday) at a U.S. base (Camp Victory) near Baghdad. He succeeds General George Casey.
General Petraeus said he thinks prospects for success are good. He warned failure would - in his words- "doom" Iraq to "continued violence and civil strife."
In a letter to troops today (Saturday), the four-star general stressed the importance of working, in his words, "shoulder to shoulder with our Iraqi comrades" to bolster security.
General Petraeus will oversee President Bush's controversial plan to send an additional 21-thousand-500 troops to Iraq.
Meanwhile, in Shi'ite areas of Baghdad today (Saturday), at least eight civilians died in two separate attacks by suspected Sunni insurgents.
Police say gunmen attacked a house (in the southern Baghdad area of Musayyib), killing three members of a family and wounding two others. In the central part of the capital, a car bomb killed at least five people and wounded 10 others (in the neighborhood of Karradah).
