The U.S. Senate is holding a hearing on the nomination of General George Casey to be the U.S. Army's next Chief of Staff.
During the Senate Armed Services Committee hearing today (Thursday), Republican Senator John McCain (of the U.S. state of Arizona) asked Casey if President Bush's strategy was working. Casey said Mr. Bush's plan to send five additional brigades was enough to help quell sectarian violence in Iraq.
Senator McCain, a prospective 2008 presidential candidate, said Congress was not given correct information by Casey regarding progress of the war in Iraq. McCain said he questioned the judgment Casey employed previously as commander of U.S. forces in Iraq.
Key Democratic and Republican senators are writing several resolutions opposing President Bush's plan to increase troop levels in Iraq. They are expected to be debated by senators next week.
