지난해 2006년 한해동안 취재활동중에 살해된 기자들의 수가 적어도 110명에 달해 10여년 만에 최고치를 기록했다고 국제언론감시단체인 ‘국경없는 기자회’는 전했습니다.
프랑스 파리에 본부를 둔 이 단체는 연례 보고서에서 기자들에게 가장 위험한 지역으로 이라크를 지목했습니다.
이라크에서는 지난해 65명의 기자들이 살해됐습니다. ‘국경없는 기자회’는 또 러시아의 여기자 안나 폴릿콥스카야는 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령이 지난 2000년 취임한 이래 러시아에서 살해된 20번째 기자라고 말했습니다.
이밖에도 ‘국경없는 기자회’는 지난 해 중국과 쿠바, 그리고 아프리카의 많은 지역들에서 수백명의 기자들이 체포되거나 억류됐었다고 전했습니다.

An international press freedom group says 2006 was the deadliest year for journalists and media workers in more than a decade, with at least 110 killed while performing their duties.
The Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (Reporters Sans Frontieres), in its annual report, identified Iraq as the most deadly country for journalists. Sixty-five were killed there last year.
Reporters Without Borders also said Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya was the 20th journalist killed in Russia since President Valdimir Putin came to power in 2000.
The group also said hundreds of journalists were arrested or detained last year in China, Cuba, and many parts of Africa.
In its report, Reporters Without Borders also criticized democratic states worldwide for failing to strongly defend journalists who were threatened or arrested last year during the worldwide controversy over the publication in Denmark of cartoons portraying the Prophet Muhammad.
