조지 부시 미국 대통령은 미국의 공영 ‘NPR 방송’과의 회견에서 이라크 내 미군을 보호하기 위해 필요한 모든 일을 다 할 것이라고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 미군과 무고한 이라크 민간인들에게 피해를 입힐 정도로 이란이 이라크에서 군사행동을 강화할 경우 미국은 단호히 대처할 것이라고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 군 최고통수권자인 자신이 미군과 이라크인들, 그리고 이라크 정부에 불화와 해악의 씨를 뿌리려는 사람들로부터 스스로를 보호할 수 있도록 돕겠다고 말하는 것은 상식적인 일이라고 강조했습니다.
부시 대통령은 지난 1월 초 이란이 미군병사들을 공격하기 위한 물질적 지원을 하고 있다면서, 미국은 이라크 내 미국의 적들에게 첨단무기와 훈련을 제공하고 있는 조직을 찾아내 파괴할 것이라고 말한 바 있습니다.
부시 대통령은 또 이란 정부의 핵무기 개발에 대해서도 분명한 입장을 거듭 밝혔습니다.
부시 대통령은 미국은 이란의 핵 개발 문제에 대해 외교적으로 대처하고 있다면서, 외교적 해결이 가능할 것으로 믿는다고 말했습니다. 그는 또 미국은 이란 정부와 이란 국민에게 핵무기 개발을 계속할 경우 국제사회에서 고립이 더해갈 것이란 신호를 보내고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.

부시 대통령은 미국은 이란인들에게 아무런 적의도 품고 있지 않다고 말했습니다. 부시 대통령은 이어 제2차 세계대전 중 나치 독일에 의한 조직적인 유대인 대학살을 부정한 마흐무드 아마디네자드 이란 대통령에 대해 언급하면서 “미국은 핵무기 보유를 고집하고, 역사를 다시 쓰려고 하는 정부에 대해 깊이 우려하고 있다”고 말했습니다.

In an interview with the broadcasting organization N-P-R, President George W. Bush said that the United States will "do what it takes" to protect U.S. soldiers in Iraq:
"If Iran escalates its military action in Iraq to the detriment of our troops and/or innocent Iraqi people, we will respond firmly. It makes common sense for the commander-in-chief to say to our troops and the Iraqi people and the Iraqi government that we will help you defend yourself from people that want to sow discord and harm."
Earlier this month, President Bush said that Iran is "providing material support for attacks on American troops" and that the United States would "seek out and destroy the networks providing advanced weaponry and training to our enemies in Iraq." Mr. Bush also spoke about the Iranian government's pursuit of a nuclear weapon:
"We're dealing with this issue diplomatically, and I think this can be solved diplomatically. And the message that we are working to send to the Iranian regime and the Iranian people is that you will become increasingly isolated if you continue to pursue a nuclear weapon."
Speaking directly to the Iranian people, Mr. Bush said that their government was causing them "deprivation":
"You've got a chance to really flourish again as a great tradition. However, if your government continues to insist upon a nuclear weapon, there will be lost opportunity for the Iranian people. They won't be able to realize their full potential."
The United States, says President Bush, bears no hostility to the Iranian people. In a reference to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's denial of the Holocaust -- the systematic murder of six million Jews by Nazi Germany during the Second World War -- Mr. Bush said, "We're just deeply concerned about a government that is insisting upon having a nuclear weapon, and at the same time [is] rewriting history."
