U.S. officials are reportedly considering partially lifting financial sanctions against North Korea to smooth the way for progress at upcoming six-party nuclear talks, expected to reconvene in February.
The Treasury Department has accused Pyongyang of laundering money and counterfeiting dollars - charges North Korea denies.
North Korea has said Washington must lift financial sanctions it imposed in September 2005 before the nuclear talks can progress.
In response to the sanctions, North Korea boycotted any talks for over a year and returned to the table only after testing its first nuclear weapon last October.
Washington has maintained the financial sanctions are a law enforcement issue, separate from the nuclear diplomacy.
