미국에서 ‘중국 배우기’에 나서는 사람들이 늘고 있습니다. 현재 미국에는 6백개 대학에서 중국어를 가르치고 있습니다. 교육전문가들은 세계적으로 중국의 경제적 영향력이 확대됨에 따라 미국에서도 중국에 대해 배우려는 경향은 계속 늘어나고 있다고 분석합니다. 중국을 배우는 것은 미국 학생들이 세계에서 가장 빠르게 성장하는 경제를 접할 수 있는 관문이 되기 때문입니다. 미국 플로리다주에 있는 롤린스 대학도 최근 중국과 더욱 가까운 관계를 맺고 있는 학교 중 하나입니다. 플로리다에서 ‘미국의 소리방송’ 특파원이 보내온 소식입니다.

플로리다주에 있는 롤린스 대학교는 규모는 작지만, 국제적인 시각을 키워가는 대학입니다. 이 학교는 많은 중국 학자들을 초청에 직접 학생을 가르치게 하고 있습니다. 베이징 국제학 대학교에서 온 텡 지멩 교수도 그 중 한 명입니다.
텡 지멩 교수는 “중국과 미국은 국제사회에서 가장 중요한 세력이 될 것”이라면서 “양국 간에 보다 넓은 이해가 필요하다고 본다”고 말했습니다. 롤린스 대학 내 중국학 센터는 예술과 문화, 경제 등 20여개의 중국 관련 과목을 가르치고 있습니다.
또 미국과 중국 대학 간에 교육과 문화교류 사업도 진행하고 있습니다. 제프 조셉 씨는 중국 관련 수업을 받는 학생 중 한 명입니다. 조셉 씨는 “많은 사람들이 중국어를 배우고 있다”며 “이를 통해 중국에서 직접 사업을 하거나, 또는 중국에서 공동사업을 펼치려는 미국기업에 취업할 때 보다 나은 기회를 얻을 수 있을 것”이라고 말했습니다.
롤린스 대학에서는 매년 수십명의 교직원과 학생들이 중국을 방문합니다. 또 첨단 통신기술을 활용해 미국에 있는 학생들에게도 중국에 대한 깊이 있는 교육 기회를 제공합니다. 이 학교 중국학 센터 루이스 던컨 소장의 설명입니다. 던컨 소장은 롤린스 대학 강의실과 중국 상하이에 있는 강의실을 실시간으로 연결함으로써, 상하이의 교수가 롤린스 대학 학생들에게 직접 강의할 수 있도록 한다고 설명합니다.
중국 정부와 미국 국무부도 롤린스 대학과 같은 교육기관의 노력을 뒷받침하고 있습니다. 현재 중국 내에는 30여개 이상의 미국 교육기관이 운영되고 있습니다. 이와 동시에 중국의 철학자인 공자의 이름을 딴 베이징 ‘공자 연구소’는 전세계 23개국에서 중국어와 중국 문화를 알리고 있습니다.
텡 지멩 교수는 미국과 마찬가지로 중국도 영향력을 넓히기 위해 ‘문화의 힘’을 활용하고 있다고 설명합니다. 텡 지멩 교수는 “이런 교류를 통해 양국 간 가교를 만들 수 있다”며 “이는 경제적이나 사업적 관점에서 서로를 알아가는 것과 달리, 두 사람이 마음과 마음으로 대화하는 것과 같은 효과가 있다”고 말했습니다.
특히 이런 교류는 롤린스 대학에서 젊은 학생들이 중국에 대해 배우는 것처럼 젊은 세대에 시작돼야 한다는 게 텡 지멩 교수의 주장입니다.
롤린스 대학과 다른 학교들은 국제화 노력의 일환으로 중국과의 연결을 넓히고 있습니다. 하지만 롤린스 대학의 1천7백여명 재학생 중 1백명이 중국학 센터에서 수업을 듣는다는 사실은 미국 기업인들과 마찬가지로 미국 학생들도 중국을 국제사회에서 막강한 세력으로 인식하고 있다는 것을 보여줍니다.

Many Americans are starting to take their Chinese studies seriously. Today, more than 600 US colleges and universities offer courses in Mandarin. It's a trend educators say will continue to grow as China's economic influence spreads. And for students, it's a gateway into one of the fastest growing economies in the world. VOA's Steve Mort reports from Rollins College in Florida, one of the many schools that are building closer ties with China.

Rollins College in Florida might be a small institution, but its view is increasingly global. Professor Teng Jimeng from Beijing's Foreign Studies University is one of many Chinese scholars invited to teach here.
"China and the United States are going to be the powers and going to be the most important players in the international arena, and I think there should be more understanding between the two countries."
The China Center at Rollins offers around 20 classes in arts, culture and economics. Rollins is working with U.S. and Chinese colleges on educational and cultural exchanges -- and students like Jeff Joseph seem impressed.
"A lot of people are beginning to take Mandarin (study Mandarin Chinese) so that they can have better opportunities to go into business in China, or to join American companies that have joint ventures in China."
Dozens of Rollins students, faculty and staff members visit China each year, and college director Lewis Duncan says cutting-edge technology is also helping build links.
"A classroom in Shanghai and a classroom here at Rollins can be linked together in a way that the faculty member that is teaching our China history class may be a Chinese professor in Shanghai, teaching in real time a class here at Rollins."
The Chinese government and the U.S. State Department back the work of colleges like Rollins. More than 30 American educational institutions are operating in China.
At the same time, Beijing's so-called "Confucius Institute," named for the famous Chinese thinker, promotes Chinese language and culture in 23 countries. Professor Teng Jimeng says China, like the U.S., is using "soft power" to spread its influence.
"It is through these means that we can build a bridge. I mean, it's not the kind of a bridge [or link, through which] people get to know each other economically or in a business fashion, but it's almost like a heart-to-heart... It's almost like a heart-to-heart conversation between the two people, which must start from the younger generations -- the students, per se, on the campuses."
For Rollins and other colleges, developing links with China is part of a broader effort to go global. Rollins is based in Florida, a state with much stronger ties to South America than Asia.
But of the 17-hundred students here, more than a hundred are taking courses at the China Center -- a sign that American students, like American businesses, recognize China as a serious power on the world stage.
