(Eng)

Russia has agreed to build four nuclear reactors in India to help the country with its increasing energy demands.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh signed the deal today (Thursday) following a meeting in New Delhi. President Putin is in India for a two-day visit.

Some of the nuclear reactors will be built in the southern Indian town of Kudankulan, where Russia is already constructing two reactors.

The Russian deal follows a landmark agreement India signed with the United States last year, that allows nuclear fuel and technology to be sent to India for civilian use. The agreement ended a 30-year ban on such U.S. exports to help stop the spread of nuclear weapons.
