U.S. officials have announced a massive aid package for Afghanistan and new military initiatives, ahead of an expected Taleban offensive in the coming months.
A State Department spokesman says the White House plans to ask Congress for seven billion dollars in new funds for civilians purposes, and two billion dollars for military assistance. Since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan, the United States has provided a total of about 14 billion dollars in assistance.
The spokesman says U.S. officials hope NATO will match the new initiatives at a ministerial meeting Friday in Brussels.
The U.S. military today (Thursday) announced a four month tour-of-duty extension for about 35-hundred soldiers serving in Afghanistan.
There are now about 23-thousand U.S. troops in the country, the highest number since combat began in October 2001.
