Russia's Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Sergei Ivanov, is in India to start talks on forging closer ties ahead of a state visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.
Ivanov met with his Indian counterpart (A.K. Antony) in New Delhi today (Wednesday) on a series of arms and economic deals. They signed a deal to produce Russian aircraft engines in India and begin joint development of a new transport plane.
On Tuesday, Ivanov discussed closer technical cooperation with the heads of some of India's top information technology and defense companies in Bangalore.
Russia hopes to beat competition from other nations (, including the U.S. and Sweden,) for a multi-billion-dollar deal to sell India 126 multi-purpose fighter jets. For its part, India wants to boost its ownership in Russia's rich Sakhalin oil fields.
Russia is already helping India build two one-thousand-megawatt nuclear reactors in the country's south (in the town of Kudankulam) and also wants to expand cooperation in this field.
