이란은 반기문 유엔사무총장에게 이라크에서 5명의 이란인을 체포한 미국에 대해 조치를 취할 것을 요구하는 공식 항의 서한을보냈습니다.
이란은 항의 서한에서 지난 1월 11일 미군이 이라크 북부 이르빌시에 있는 한 이란 공관을 기습공격한 것은 “불법이며 국제법과 외교 조약의 기본 원칙을 명백히 위반한 것”이라고 강력히 비난했습니다.
이란은 체포당시 이라크에서 불법 활동에 연루돼 있었던 5명의 이란 관리들은 외교관들이라고 말하고 이들을 즉각 석방할 것을 요구했습니다.
미군은 이들 5명의 이란인들이 이라크 저항세력의 무장화에 개입됐었다고 말했습니다.

Iran has sent an official letter of complaint to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon demanding action against the United States for its recent arrest of five Iranians in Iraq.The Iranian letter strongly condemns the January 11th raid by U.S. forces on an Iranian office in the northern city of Irbil as an "illegal, flagrant violation of the basic principles of international law and diplomatic conventions."
Iran has demanded the immediate release of the five men that Tehran officials say are diplomats who were engaged in legal activity in Iraq when they were arrested.
The U.S. military says the five Iranians were involved in arming Iraqi insurgents.
