미국의 콘돌리사 라이스 국무장관은 중동의 현재 여건들이 최근 몇 해동안에 비해 평화합의에 도달하는데 훨씬 도움이 되는 것으로 생각한다고 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 중동방문에 이어 독일 방문을 마치고 영국으로 가는 전용기내에서 기자들에게 미국, 유럽연합, 러시아, 유엔 등 중동평화중재 4당사자 회담이 2월2일에 워싱턴에서 열리는 것을 시작으로 중동문제에 관한 외교활동이 활발히 전개될 것이라고 밝히면서 이같이 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 영국의 토니 블레어 총리와 마가렛 베케트 외무장관에게 자신의 중동방문과 이스라엘-팔레스타인 평화협상 부활계획에 관해 설명했습니다.중동 문제에 관한 외교활동은 중동평화중재 4당사자 회담에 이어 2월 중순쯤 열릴 예정인 라이스 장관, 에후드 올메르트 이스라엘 총리, 마흐무드 압바스 팔레스타인 자치정부 수반의 3자회담으로 마무리될 것으로 예상됩니다.
한편, 이스라엘의 에프라임 스네 국방차관은 18일, 네타냐에서 열린 회의에 참석해 연설하는 가운데 이스라엘과 팔레스타인, 양측이 평화협상 재개를 통해 2년안에 최종 평화협정에 도달할 수 있어야 한다고 말했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in London for talks with British leaders on efforts to revive the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and the war in Iraq.
Rice told reporters on the flight to London from Germany today (Thursday) that she believes conditions in the Middle East are now "much more conducive" to an agreement than in recent years.
She said a flurry of diplomatic activity will begin with a February second meeting in Washington with the international Quartet on the Middle East -- the U.S., European Union, United Nations, and Russia.
Diplomatic activity will be capped by Rice's three-way meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in mid-February.
London is Rice's last stop after her tour of the Middle East. She returns to Washington Friday.
