일본의 아베 신조 총리는 12일, 일본은 아프가니스탄에서 나토군의 평화 안보 임무에 대한 지원을 확대할 것이라고 다짐했습니다.
아베 총리는 이날 일본 총리로는 처음으로 브뤼셀의 나토 본부를 방문한 후에 기자들에게 일본은 전략적 동반자로서 나토와 협력을 증진할 것이며, 특히 아프가니스탄의 인도주의 지원과 재건계획을 지원할 것이라고 말했습니다.
얍 데 후프 쉐퍼 나토 사무총장은 일본과 나토의 강화된 관계에는 민간 구호와 에너지 안보 등 이른바 ‘강력한 정치적 우산’이 포함될 것이라고 말했습니다.
현재 일본은 자위대의 해외 파병을 제한하는 평화헌법에 묶여 있습니다. 아베 총리는 그러나 국제안보에서 일본 역할의 확대를 추구하고 있습니다.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pledged to increase his country's support for NATO peace and security missions.
Mr. Abe told reporters today (Friday) that Japan intends to boost cooperation with the alliance as a strategic partner, assisting specifically with humanitarian and reconstruction projects in Afghanistan. He spoke in Brussels, where he became the first Japanese prime minister to visit NATO headquarters.
NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said Japan's enhanced relations with the organization will include what he called a "strong political umbrella" that would involve cooperation in civilian emergencies and energy security.
Japan is bound by a pacifist constitution that limits how its troops can be used. But Prime Minister Abe is seeking to increase the nation's role in international security.
