The new archbishop of Warsaw resigned today (Sunday) just 30 minutes before he was to be ceremonially installed in the post during a special Mass in the Polish capital.
Pope Benedict accepted Cardinal Stanislaw Wielgus' resignation following the archbishop's admission two days ago that he had cooperated with Poland's communist-era secret police.
Shortly after he was formally consecrated as archbishop Friday, Cardinal Wielgus issued a statement admitting he had been a communist-era spy. He had previously denied it. The cardinal expressed remorse for his actions, which he acknowledged have damaged the church.
