이라크 주둔 미군은 전 이라크 독재자 사담 후세인의 처형에 관여하지 않았다며 만약 미국이 사담 후세인의 신병을 확보하고 있었다면 다른 방식으로 처리했을 것이라고 말했습니다.
이라크 주둔 미군 대변인인 윌리암 칼드웰 소장은 3일 이라크 수도 바그다드에서 기자들에게 이같이 말했습니다.
칼드웰 소장은 지난 30일 사담 후세인이 처형되기 직전에 이라크 당국에 사담의 신병을 넘겼다며 이라크 정부가 처형과 관련한 모든 일을 담당했다고 말했습니다.
현재 인터넷에는 사담 후세인이 처형되기 직전 조롱당하는 모습을 핸드폰 카메라로 찍은 동영상이 유포되고 있습니다.
이라크 정부는 처형장에 있었던 증인이 어떻게 이같은 장면을 촬영해 인터넷과 텔레비젼 방송국에 유포했는지 조사중이라고 말했습니다.
사담 후세인의 지지자들은 사담이 처형된 후 이라크 여러 도시와 요르단에서 항의시위를 벌였습니다.

The U.S. military in Iraq says it had no role in the execution of Saddam Hussein and would have handled things differently if it had "physical custody" of the former Iraqi dictator.
A spokesman (Major General William Caldwell) told reporters in Baghdad today (Wednesday) that U.S. forces handed over Saddam to Iraqi authorities shortly before he was hanged on Saturday, and that Iraqis were in charge of all necessary measures for the conduct of the execution.
A unofficial video of Saddam's hanging captured on a mobile telephone showed one person taunting him just before the execution.
The Iraqi government says it is investigating how a witness to the hanging filmed the procedure and released it on the Internet and to television stations.
Saddam's supporters have staged demonstrations in several Iraqi cities and in Jordan since Saturday's execution.
