2007년 새해가 밝았습니다. 아시아 각국에서는 수많은 사람들이 새해맞이 기쁨을 나누고 있는 가운데 역내 각국 지도자들은 국제사회와의 협력을 다짐하고 국정운영에 관한 새로운 각오를 밝히며 새해를 맞았습니다. 아시아 지도자들의 신년사와 각국의 신년맞이 표정을 살펴보겠습니다.
아시아인들이 2007년 새해 시작을 축하하고 있는 가운데 역내 지도자들은 앞으로 1년 간의 국정운영에 관한 정책들을 발표했습니다.
일본의 아베 신조 총리는 신년사에서 중국과 한국과의 관계 개선을 강조했습니다. 일본과 한국, 중국 세 나라 관계는 20세기 초 일본이 중국과 한국에 자행한 군사침략의 역사를 왜곡하고 있다는 비판이 높아가면서 지난 몇 년간 극도로 경색돼 왔습니다.
중국의 후진타오 국가주석은 국내적으로는 조화로운 사회건설을 추구하고, 국제적으로는 오염이나 경제성장과 같은 공동의 현안들에 대해 다른 나라들과 협력해 나갈 것이라고 말했습니다.
후진타오 주석은 국제사회는 다극화 경향이 증대되고 있으며, 경제가 확대되면서 각국은 상호의존성이 더욱 커가고 있다고 말했습니다. 후 주석은 또 세계평화와 발전을 위한 새로운 기회들이 출현하고 있다면서 중국은 타이완과의 평화적인 재통합을 추구할 것이라고 강조했습니다.
그러나 타이완의 첸수이벤 총통은 타이페이에서 행한 신년사에서 타이완의 주권은 타이완인들의 문제라고 강조했습니다. 천수이벤 총통은 또 타이완은 결단코 중국에 속해 있지 않다고 선언했습니다. 타이완은 지난 1949년 집권 국민당 세력이 공산당에 쫓겨 타이완으로 옮겨온 이래 독립적으로 통치돼왔으나, 중국은 타이완을 자국령으로 간주하고 있습니다.
이밖에 인도네시아의 새해 표정은 지난 30일 여객선 침몰사고로 가족을 잃은 수백명의 인도네시아인들로 인해 가라앉은 분위기입니다. 이 여객선 침몰 사고로 4백여명이 목숨을 잃은 것으로 추산됩니다.
한편 수 주 동안 계속된 홍수로 수천명의 이재민이 발생한 말레이시아에서는 여러 새해맞이 축하행사가 취소됐습니다.
그런가 하면 필리핀에서는 사고로 6백여명이 부상했습니다. 대부분의 부상은 새해의 시작을 기념하는 불꽃놀이나 축포들로 인한 것이었습니다.
태국의 수도 방콕에서는 새해 전날 일련의 폭발사고가 발생해 3명이 사망하고 수십명이 부상하는 바람에 축하행사들이 자제됐습니다. 경찰과 군당국은 새로운 공격에 대비해 전국 곳곳에 병력을 증원하고 있습니다.
그런가 하면 홍콩에서는 이날부터 대부분의 공공장소에서 흡연을 금지하는 금연법이 시행에 들어갔습니다. 식당과 술집 주인들은 새 금연법이 앞으로 그들의 수입에 미칠 영향을 우려하고 있습니다.

Asian government leaders welcomed 2007 with new pledges for international cooperation and policy speeches, hours after millions of people around the region celebrated the start of the new year. But as VOA's Kate Pound Dawson reports from our Asia News Center in Hong Kong, in some parts of the region, celebrations were muted following local tragedies.
Hours after millions of people in Asia cheered the start of 2007, leaders in the region set out their policies for the next 12 months. In Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe greeted the new year with a pledge to improve ties with China and South Korea.
Relations with those countries have been strained in the past few years because of their perception that Japan has whitewashed the history of its military expansionism in the first half of the last century.
In China, President Hu Jintao pledged to pursue social harmony at home, and to work with other countries to address common issues, such as pollution and economic growth.
Mr. Hu says that the trend toward a multi-polar world is growing and as the global economy expands, countries are becoming more interdependent. He says that new opportunities are emerging for maintaining world peace and promoting development. China's president also stressed that he intends to pursue peaceful reunification with Taiwan.
However, in Taipei, Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian said in his New Year speech that the island's sovereignty was a matter for its residents. He declared that the island "definitely does not belong" to China.
Taiwan has been governed separately since Nationalist forces fled there in 1949, but Beijing considers the island its territory. Elsewhere in Asia, the dawn of 2007 was subdued for hundreds of Indonesian families who lost relatives in a ferry sinking on Saturday. More than 400 people are believed to have died in the sinking.
In Malaysia, many New Year's celebrations were canceled because of weeks of flooding that have left thousands of people homeless. In the Philippines, more than 600 people were injured in New Year's accidents. Most were injured by fireworks or gunfire to mark the start of the year.
Celebrations were subdued in Thailand, after a series of bombings New Year's Eve in Bangkok left three dead and dozens injured. Police and army patrols were increased in many parts of the country to prevent new attacks.
And in Hong Kong, smokers faced a new law that bars lighting up in most public places. Restaurant and bar owners have said they are concerned about how the change will affect their sales.
