한국 출신의 반기문 신임 유엔 사무총장이 1일 공식임기를 시작했습니다. 반 총장은 31일 자정을 기해 제8대 유엔 사무총장에 올랐습니다. 반 총장은 대대적인 유엔 개혁을 계획하고 있는 것으로 전해지고 있습니다.

올해 62세의 반 총장은 북한과의 평화 구축도 재임 기간 중 중요한 과제가 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
반 장관은 지난 12월 취임선서식을 가진 후, 유엔 사무총장으로서 차세대를 위해 보다 평화롭고 번영하며 공정한 세상을 건설하기 위해 노력할 것이라고 밝힌 바 있습니다.

New United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon officially assumes leadership of the world body today (Monday).
Mr. Ban became the eighth U.N. secretary general at midnight. He is reported to be planning sweeping changes for the 192-member organization.
Mr. Ban says his first priority will be to restore trust in the United Nations, which has seen its prestige tarnished in recent years by scandal and corruption.
The 62-year-old South Korean diplomat says making peace with North Korea also will be a top priority of his tenure.
After he took his oath of office in December, Mr. Ban pledged to use his position to work toward building a more peaceful, prosperous and just world for future generations.
Mr. Ban succeeds Kofi Annan, who held the U.N.'s top job for the last 10 years.
