일본과 중국 역사학자들은 중국 베이징에서 27일 관계회복과 긴장완화를 목적으로 한 이틀간의 역사 연구 회의를 마쳤습니다. 이번 공동역사연구위원회 회의는 중국이 특히 민감하게 생각하고 있는 난징 대학살 문제에 관한 논의는 피했습니다. 하지만 정부에 의해 임명된 이들 역사학자들은 내년에 회의를 계속하기로 합의했습니다.
중국은 일본군이 지난 1937년에 중국 난징시를 급습해 중국인 30 만명 이상을 학살했다고 주장하고 있습니다. 다른 역사 기록들은 중국인 14만여명이 학살된 것으로 추산하고 있습니다.
일-중 공동역사연구위는 내년 3월과 12월에 회의를 계속하고 2008년 6월에 마지막 회의를 가질 예정입니다.

Japanese and Chinese scholars have ended two days of history talks in Beijing aimed at mending ties and reducing tensions between the former World War Two enemies.
The talks skirted more sensitive topics such as the Nanjing massacre, but the government-appointed scholars have agreed to continue their meetings next year.
Beijing says more than 300-thousand Chinese were killed during a raid on Nanjing in 1937. Other accounts estimate about 140-thousand died.
Japan's top delegate (Shinichi Kitaoka) called the talks "serious, frank and friendly." He contrasted, however, the state of academic freedom in the two countries, noting that the Japanese side is not bound by politics to follow a certain point of view.
The talks will continue in March and December of 2007, with a final meeting scheduled for June 2008.
