미국의 로버트 게이츠 신임 국방장관은 취임 후 이틀만인 20일, 예고없이 바그다드를 전격 방문해 이라크의 미군 증강에 관해 논의했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 미국 관리들이 최종 결정이 내려지기 전에 병력 증강 규모와 적정 여부, 임무 등에 관해 검토해야 할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
미국의 중부군사령관인 존 아비자이드 대장은 모든 방안이 검토대상이 될 것이라고 말했습니다. 게이츠 장관은 이날, 바그다드에서 이라크 관리들과 회담을 가졌습니다.
한편 미군 당국이 바그다드에서 폭탄이 터져 2명의 미군이 사망했다고 발표한 가운데 이날, 바그다드에서는 2건의 차량폭탄 폭발로 적어도 15명이 사망했습니다.
미군은 또 수백명의 민간인들을 살해한 알-카에다 고위 지도자를 모술에서 생포했다고 발표했습니다.
이날 발표된 군 성명은 신원이 밝혀지지 않은 이 남자가 지난 12월 14일 기습작전때 사로잡혔다고 말했습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has discussed a possible increase in American forces in Iraq during an unannounced visit to Baghdad, two days after taking office.
Gates said before a decision is made, U.S. officials must consider how big any troop increase would be, whether it is affordable, and what its mission would be.
The commander of the U.S. forces in the Middle East, General John Abizaid, said all options are on the table.
Gates also is meeting today (Wednesday) with Iraqi officials.
In other news, two separate car bombings killed at least 15 people in Baghdad, while the U.S. military said bomb blasts killed two American soldiers in the Iraqi capital.
The U.S. military also announced the capture of a senior al-Qaida terrorist leader in Mosul who it says was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of civilians.
