Iraq's national reconciliation conference has begun, with hundreds of delegates from the country's rival ethnic and religious factions gathering in Baghdad.
Iraqi political figures, parties and other groups are expected to discuss ways to stop the spiraling sectarian violence that is now killing nearly 100 Iraqis each day.
The VOA correspondent in Baghdad (Margaret Besheer) says representatives from at least one Sunni party (The Iraqi National Accord Party) have already withdrawn from the talks, in protest over groups that were not invited to participate.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has pledged to improve security by targeting all sources of violence in Iraq, including insurgents and militias.
Meanwhile, U.S. and Iraqi forces have detained six suspects in a raid in Baghdad's Sadr City. The U.S. military said one fighter was killed and another wounded during the raid. No coalition or Iraqi forces were injured.
