The official Chinese news agency Xinhua today (Wednesday) quotes Beijing Communist Party Secretary Liu Qi as saying efforts will be made to improve supervision over preparations for the Olympics to prevent potential corruption problems.
Liu made the comments following an announcement Tuesday that former vice mayor of Beijing Liu Zhihua is facing prosecution on corruption charges.
Liu had been in charge of overseeing construction projects for the Olympics and allegedly took several million dollars in bribes while in his former post. He also is accused of helping his mistress win valuable contracts.
The government says Liu's case will not have any impact on Olympic preparations.
