주한 미군 사령관 버웰 벨 장군은 7일 한국의 주한미군 방위비 분담금이 너무 적다며 불평을 토로했습니다.
한국정부는 하루 전인 6일 내년도 주한미군 방위비 분담금으로 약 8억 달러를 부담하기로 합의한 바 있습니다.
벨 주한 미군 사령관은 내년에 주한 미군이 심각한 자금부족에 시달리게될 지 모른다며 주한 미군의 전투준비 태세 유지와 관련해 우려를 표시했습니다.
미군당국은 부족한 예산을 대신 메우겠다고 성명에서 밝혔습니다.
미국은 현재 한국에 2만9천5백명의 병력을 주둔시키고 있으나 오는 2008년까지 약 4천명을 감축할 계획입니다.

The commander of U.S. forces in South Korea says Seoul is paying too little for the American troops stationed in its country.
U.S. Army General Burwell Bell made the complaint today (Thursday), a day after South Korea agreed to pay Washington around 800 million dollars for the American military presence.
Bell said he is concerned the U.S. Forces in South Korea will face serious funding shortfalls next year. He expressed concern about the military's ability to maintain its preparedness for a potential war.
A U.S. military statement says it will compensate for the funding shortfall.
The U.S. maintains 29 thousand-500 troops in South Korea, but plans to reduce that number by about four thousand by 2008.
The deployment is a legacy of the Korean War, which ended in 1953 with a cease-fire, not a peace treaty
