마이크 조한스 미국 농무부 장관은 한국이 미국산 쇠고기 선적을 세 번째 거부한 데 대해 강력하게 항의했습니다. 조한스 장관은 한국의 조치는 교역 상대로서의 도리에 어긋난 것이라고 주장했습니다.
한국은 6일 오전 미국산 쇠고기에서 뼈조각이 발견됐다며 선적을 중단시켰습니다. 한국은 광우병 우려때문에 3년간 미국산 쇠고기 수입을 금지하다가, 지난 9월부터 재개했습니다.
하지만 한국은 수입 재개 이후 세 차례 선적을 모두 거부했습니다. 조한스 장관은 세 차례 모두 식품 보건 상의 문제가 없었다는 입장입니다. 그는 한국 정부의 조치를 미국산 쇠고기 수입을 제한하려는 의도로 밖에 받아들일 수 없다고 말했습니다.
한편 미국 관리들은 쇠고기 수입 문제로 양국간자유무역협정에 대한 의회의 승인을 얻는 데 어려움이 있을 수 있다고 우려했습니다.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns says South Korea's rejection of a third shipment of U.S. beef is unacceptable and not the way trading partners should work with one another.
South Korea blocked the shipment earlier today (Wednesday) saying it found fragments of bone in the meat. The nation agreed to resume accepting U.S. beef in September after a three-year ban due to fears over Mad Cow disease.
But South Korea has rejected all three shipments of beef sent since the agreement. The U.S. agriculture secretary said today (Wednesday) there was no food safety issue with any of the shipments. He said he can only conclude South Korea is seeking to restrict beef trade.
U.S. officials have said the beef issue could hurt chances for Congressional approval of a free trade agreement being negotiated with South Korea.
