조지 부시 미국 대통령은 퇴임하는 코피 아난 유엔 사무총장을 위해 5일 백악관에서 비공개 만찬을 베풀 예정입니다. 백악관 대변인은 이날 만찬은 유엔을 위한 아난 총장의 공로에 대한 감사의 뜻으로 마련됐다고 전했습니다.
이 대변인은 또 이번 만찬은 부시 대통령이 자신과 의견대립을 보이는 사람이라도 환대해야한다는 믿음을 보여준다고 말했습니다.
아난 총장은 미국 주도하의 이라크 전쟁을 반대해왔습니다. 아난 총장은 지난 3일 영국 BBC 방송과의 인터뷰에서 이라크내 폭력사태는 내전으로 규정됐던 과거 분쟁들보다 더 나쁜 상황이라고 지적했습니다.
아난 총장은 또 이라크 국민들은 축출된 사담 후세인 전 이라크 대통령 시절 보다 더 큰 고통에 놓여있다는 일각의 주장에 동감을 표시했습니다.

President Bush will host a private social dinner at the White House tonight (Tuesday) for outgoing United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
A presidential spokesman says the dinner was arranged to thank Annan for his service to the United Nations. He says the dinner demonstrates President Bush's belief in being hospitable, despite having disagreements with someone.
Mr. Annan opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
On Sunday, Mr. Annan said in a television interview (with the BBC) that the violence in Iraq is much worse than in some past conflicts that were labeled a civil war. The U.N. leader also said he would agree with average Iraqis who say they were better off under the ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon will succeed Kofi Annan as U.N. secretary-general on January first.
