Former U.S. President Bill Clinton has announced a plan to dramatically cut the prices of H.I.V. and AIDS treatment for children in poor countries.

Mr. Clinton announced during a visit to New Delhi today (Thursday) that two Indian pharmaceutical companies (Cipla and Ranbaxy) have agreed to sell anti-retroviral drugs to children for as little as 16 cents a day.

Under the agreement, the companies will supply 19 different types of the drugs for prices that are, on average, 45 percent less than the lowest rates currently available in impoverished countries.

The prices will be available in 62 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

The program will be subsidized by the Clinton Foundation and UNITAID, the international drug purchase facility established by France, Brazil, Chile, Norway and Britain.
