쿠바 지도자 피델 카스트로 국가평의회 의장은 건강 때문에 자신의 80회 생일 축하잔치에 참석하지 못한다고 말했습니다.
카스트로 의장은 28일밤 쿠바 수도 아바나에서 수백명이 참석한 가운데 열린 생일 축하잔치에서 다른 사람이 대독한 성명을 통해 이같이 밝혔습니다.
카스트로 의장은 지난 8월 13일로 80회 생일을 맞았으나 장 수술을 받게됨에 따라 축하 잔치를 연기했었습니다.
카스트로 의장은 지난 7월 건강을 이유로 동생인 라울 카스트로 국방장관에게 권력을 이양한 바 있습니다.
쿠바 정부 관리들은 세계각국에서 온 천3백명 이상이 닷새동안의 축제에 참석한다고 말했습니다.
하객들 가운데는 볼리비아의 에보 모랄레스 대통령, 아이티의 르네 프레발 대통령, 니카라구아의 다니엘 오르테가 대통령 당선자들이 포함됐습니다.

Cuban President Fidel Castro says he is not well enough to attend celebrations in Havana to belatedly mark his 80th birthday.
Mr. Castro made the comments late Tuesday in a statement read by a presenter to hundreds of people attending a gala in the Cuban capital.
The Cuban leader turned 80 on August 13th. Celebrations to mark the occasion were postponed after he underwent intestinal surgery that forced him to hand over power temporarily to his younger brother, Raul, in late July.
Cuban officials say more than 13-hundred people from around the world are expected to attend the five-day celebration. They include Bolivian President Evo Morales, Haitian President Rene Preval and Nicaraguan President-elect Daniel Ortega.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is not expected to attend because he faces a national election on Sunday. The festivities in Cuba culminate on Saturday with a military parade in Havana.
