터키 방문 이틀째를 맞은 교황 베네딕토 16세는 29일, 동방정교회의 정신적 지도자인 바솔로뮤 총대주교와 회담하기 위해 터키 최대의 도시 이스탄불을 방문했습니다.
교황청은 이번 회담이 수세기에 걸친 로마 카톨릭과 동방정교회간의 분열을 치유하기 위한 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
이에 앞서 이날 오전에 교황은 터키 서남부의 한 기독교 교회에서 미사를 집전하고, 기독교도들의 일치와 성지에서의 모든 인류의 평화를 촉구했습니다.
이날, 수백명의 순례자들은 예수의 어머니 마리아가 그의 만년을 보낸 것으로 기독교도들이 믿고 있는 장소로 기념되고 있는 에페서스의 한 교회에서 거행된 미사에 참석했습니다.

Pope Benedict is in Turkey's largest city, Istanbul, for talks with the spiritual leader of the Orthodox churches worldwide, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
The meeting came on the second day of a four-day papal visit to largely-Muslim Turkey. The Vatican says the talks were aimed at healing the centuries-old divide between Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians.
Earlier today (Wednesday), the pontiff celebrated Mass at a Christian shrine in southwestern Turkey, where he called for Christian unity and peace in the Holy Land and for all of humanity.
Several hundred pilgrims attended the service near the town of Ephesus, at a shrine marking the place where Christians believe Mary, the mother of Jesus, spent the last years of her life.
