미국의 조지 부시 대통령은 28일, 나토 동맹국들이 아프가니스탄에서 탈레반 군과 싸우기 위해 더 많은 군대를 증파해 줄 것을 촉구했습니다.
이날 라트비아 수도 리가에서 열린 나토 정상회담에서 부시 대통령은 아프가니스탄에서 탈레반과 알-카에다를 분쇄하기 위해서는 모든 동맹국들의 확고한 결의가 요구된다고 강조했습니다.
부시 대통령은 아프가니스탄에서 작전이 성공하기 위해서는 지휘관들에게 그들이 임무를 수행하는데 필요한 자원과 신축성을 부여할 필요가 있다고 지적했습니다.프랑스, 독일, 이탈리아와 스페인 같은 동맹국들은 아프가니스탄에 병력을 증파하지 않거나 아프가니스탄의 좀 더 평화로운 북부지역에서만 군사작전을 하도록 제한하고 있습니다.
이에 앞서 캐나다의 피터 매케이 외무장관은 다른 나토 국가들이 폭력적인 남부지역에서 병력을 투입하지 않는다면 아프가니스탄에서의 캐나다 군의 작전은 해체되고 말 것이라고 경고했습니다.

President Bush has called on the NATO allies to provide more troops to battle Taleban forces in Afghanistan. In the Latvian capital, Riga, for a NATO summit, Mr. Bush stressed that defeating Taleban and al-Qaida forces in Afghanistan will require a full commitment of all alliance states.
He said success requires giving commanders the resources and flexibility they need to do their jobs.
Some alliance countries such as France, Germany, Italy and Spain have failed to provide additional troops, or have restricted the operations of their forces to Afghanistan's more peaceful north. Earlier, Canada's Foreign Minister Peter MacKay warned that public support for his country's operations in Afghanistan could dissolve if other NATO countries fail to provide troops for operations in the violent south.
NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer also expressed concern about the failure of some member countries to contribute all the troops requested by commanders.
