Malaysian media say authorities have detained 100 followers of an Islamic group accused of trying to spread banned Islamic teachings.
Malaysian religious affairs officers detained the Islamists Saturday in a raid on a building in the central state of Selangor. Officials say the group was holding an induction ceremony for new members in the town of Shah Alam (near the capital, Kuala Lumpur).
One account of Saturday's raid says undercover officers infiltrated the meeting posing as recruits, then revealed themselves and arrested the members.
A religious affairs officer in Selangor (Rahman Palil) says the Islamists are suspected of trying to revive the teachings of the banned Islamic sect, Al-Arqam.
Malaysia outlawed Al-Arqam in 1994 for allegedly promoting "deviant" Islamic beliefs to its 10-thousand followers. The leader of the sect (Ashaari Muhammad) was arrested that year and held until 2004.
